Croatia booked a date with Brazil, dashing Daichi Kamada and Japan’s hopes of beating former World Cup finalists for the third time this tournament.

The round of 16 tie between Croatia and Japan was a tight contest from beginning to end, and for the first time at Qatar 2022, there was extra time and even penalties. Daizen Maeda gave Japan the lead shortly before the break (44’), before Ivan Perisic equalised with a powerful header from the edge of the area (55’). Neither side could find a winner inside the 90 minutes and extra time also failed to bring a decisive goal.

Croatia goalkeeper Dominik Livakovic rose to the occasion in the shoot-out, saving three of Japan’s four penalties. The 2018 runners-up scored three to book a quarter-final tie against Brazil, who cruised past Korea Republic 4-1 on Monday evening. That match will be played on Friday at 16:00 CET.

Kamada involved for over an hour

The defeat spells the end of the road for Japan, for whom Daichi Kamada played until the 75th minute. This is the fourth time that the Samurai Blue have been knocked out in the round of 16 since qualifying for the World Cup for the first time back in 1998. Kamada was in the starting line-up for all four of their matches in Qatar, playing a total of 324 World Cup minutes – the most of any Eintracht player so far.

Along with Kristijan Jakic, who is still waiting for his first World Cup minutes, and France’s Randal Kolo Muani, Djibril Sow will be hoping to become the third Eagle in the last eight on Tuesday evening. His Switzerland team face Portugal at 20:00 CET as they bid to make it into the quarter-finals for the first time since 1954.
