Sancho scored 50 goals and produced 64 assists in 137 matches for Dortmund between 2017 and 2021, when he signed for United for £73million in what has proven so far to be a failed move.

Alienated from the United squad after a disagreement with manager Erik ten Hag, Sancho returned to Dortmund on loan in January, where he reached the Champions League final and registered six goal contributions in 21 appearances.

While Dortmund want to sign Sancho outright, they are unlikely to be able to afford his transfer fee. The 24-year-old hopes to leave United on a permanent deal this summer.

He said in a social media statement on Monday: “What a crazy six months. We win together we lose together, these moments only make us stronger! I’m so grateful to be apart of such an amazing group of players!

“I want to congratulate Real Madrid on winning the Champions League. We came up short on the night, but we should be super proud of ourselves. We are a family and these moments won’t break us! Thank you to everybody who came out to support us on such a special day!”

He continued: “I want to thank everyone involved at such an amazing club. I can’t thank you enough for welcoming me back the way you all have during these last six months.

“Thank you to Edin Terzic, Sebastian Kehl and Hans-Joachim Watzke for believing in me and bringing me back. Finally a special thank you to the BVB fans. Your support is amazing and I’m forever thankful for you all!”

Dortmund manager Terzic said of Sancho after the Champions League final: “The last six months, Jadon has been brilliant for us. Of course, it took him some time to get back into shape. But you could feel his quality was going to help our game, his first touch. He improved himself and those around him.

“I didn’t speak about the future because we’ve been speaking about the present. I am really happy that he is with us. Playing in a final in his hometown, it’s a very special moment for him.

“You can feel the joy he receives and brings in the dressing room. I am very happy to work with Jadon. We don’t know yet what the future will bring. But for sure, it’s going to bring him another Champions League final.”

Sancho has not played for England since a 5-0 World Cup qualifying win against Andorra in September 2021.
