Having taken over a year to sign him, big things will surely be expected of Jadon Sancho at Manchester United.

The England international blazed a trail for a number of other British youngsters to move abroad in search of regular first-team football, emerging as one of the most potent attacking forces in Europe during his time with Borussia Dortmund.

Heavily linked with a move to Old Trafford throughout 2020, the 21-year-old finally made a £73m switch earlier this year, much to the delight of United supporters. Indeed, as one of the most talented English players around, the idea of him linking up with Bruno Fernandes and Marcus Rashford was hugely exciting.

While that still is the case, it'd be fair to say Sancho's United career is yet to get going.

Clearly, it's important to remember he is still only 21 with so much time to prove himself ahead of him although his opening few games have been underwhelming. Were it not for the circus that has surrounded Cristiano Ronaldo's return to the club, perhaps his (albeit early) struggles would be much more of a story.

In 7 games, Sancho is yet to either score or assist. Of course, they aren't the only ways to measure how well someone is playing but even a look at some of his underlying metrics are somewhat concerning.

According to WhoScored data, his averages from last season (on a per-game basis) for shots, key passes and dribbles are significantly down. None of this is to suggest Sancho won't come good, although they do suggest some slight trouble in adapting to his new team.

Those problems were made worse on Wednesday night.

Facing off against what was effectively a second-string West Ham United side in the Carabao Cup third-round at Old Trafford, Sancho largely failed to deliver.

During the game, the former Manchester City youngster suffered the ultimate indignity. A street footballer forged in the fire of the cages, Sancho is renowned across the footballing globe for his flair, although he was undone by a bit of skill himself.

Pablo Fornals nutmegged him during an away win for David Moyes' side, something that was celebrated by the club's official Twitter account and leading to some interesting fan reaction.

"Sent him straight back to Dortmund," said Lew Tay.

"£73m, you're having a laugh," said FPL Fella.

said Sanj.

There is so much time for Sancho to prove himself. Right now, however, things look a little difficult.
