Following Sunderland’s 2-0 loss at Lincoln City on Saturday afternoon, manager Jack Ross warned his players they weren’t close to being good enough.
The Scot admitted that there have been occasions where he has been too quick to rush to his players’ defence.
But he showed no signs of doing so after the defeat at Sincil Bank and accepts any criticism coming their way.
“We didn’t do the basics and the fundamentals of the game right which is to work hard, be physical, be competitive,” Ross said, quoted by the Chronicle.
“So we got absolutely what we deserved from the game. I accept that any time we don’t win a game, we are going to be criticised.
“Sometimes I have been defensive about that and sometimes I think I have been justified in being defensive.
“But today any criticism we get – I get – whether individually or collectively, we deserve.
“It was nowhere near good enough and not just for Sunderland but for any football team.
“I’ve managed a lot of games now and I have not had many of those, in terms of seeing a team that is so far away from what you need to be to win games.”
The Black Cats’ loss now leaves them in sixth place and already eight points off Ipswich Town in top spot.
