Jack Grealish is poised to leave Manchester City in the summer transfer window to boost his chances of earning a place in England’s squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The 29-year-old is approaching a crossroads moment in his Manchester City career as after another disappointing season marred by injury and a lack of gametime, Grealish’s future has sprung into doubt ahead of a crucial transfer window at the Etihad Stadium.
Manchester City intend to trim the wage bill ahead of the 2025-26 campaign and bring in four to five new signings to challenge for the Premier League and UEFA Champions League titles next season – which they have far from done in either competition this term.
Grealish has been a bit-part player once again this season and aside from injuries that have derailed him from realising his potential in a sky blue shirt, Pep Guardiola has not been convinced by the former Aston Villa captain since the historic 2022-23 treble-winning campaign.
The Birmingham-born attacker was one of the first names on the teamsheet for Guardiola two seasons ago as Manchester City conquered all and did a clean sweep of the Premier League, UEFA Champions League and FA Cup to forever etch their name in the history books of English football.
However, Grealish has been a frustrating figure since that season and having remained one of the highest earners in the Manchester City dressing room, time seems to have run out for the forward to prove himself to Guardiola.
Grealish has also reportedly been left out of the travelling squad to Craven Cottage for Manchester City’s final Premier League game of the season against Fulham, which leaves little to imagine on what the summer is likely to hold for the former Aston Villa captain.
Sun Sport have reported that Grealish is ready to call it quits and seal a permanent move away from Manchester to revitalise his England career in the summer after he was once again left out of Thomas Tuchel’s Three Lions squad for June.
There were eyebrows raised at Wembley in Manchester City’s FA Cup final defeat to Crystal Palace as Guardiola brought on 19-year-old January arrival Claudio Echeverri on to change the game over Grealish, who has been a regular starter in City’s run to the final.
All signs point to a parting of ways between Manchester City and Jack Grealish in the summer and it would have to be said that bar the treble winning campaign from two years ago, Guardiola has all the reasons to move on his most expensive signing to launch a new era at the Etihad Stadium.
