Clarke’s loan spell at the Stadium of Light will officially reach a crescendo at the end of May.

After joining Sunderland on a temporary deal from Tottenham Hotspur in January, the 21-year-old went on to produce some promising performances in the third-tier.

Clarke played a major role in the second leg of the club’s play-off semi-final with Sheffield Wednesday earlier this month as he provided an assist for Patrick Roberts’ decisive goal.

Sunderland sealed promotion to the Championship by beating Wycombe Wanderers at Wembley Stadium.

Goals from Elliot Embleton and Ross Stewart allowed the Black Cats to secure a deserved victory over the Chairboys.

Sunderland manager Alex Neil will be looking to prepare his side for life in the second-tier over the coming months.

Ahead of his return to Spurs, Clarke has opted to take to Instagram to share a message with Sunderland’s supporters.

The Verdict

It will be interesting to see what the future holds for Clarke when he returns to Tottenham as he has struggled to make inroads on the club’s starting eleven since joining the club from Leeds United.

When you consider that the winger has only made four senior appearances for Spurs during his time at the club, it wouldn’t be at all surprising if he is deemed to be surplus to requirements this summer.

As for Sunderland, they will need to add some fresh faces to their squad in order to be competitive in the Championship next season.

By nailing his transfer recruitment, there is every chance that Neil could guide his side to a relative amount of success in the second-tier later this year.
