Jack Butland’s shock Rangers confession shows Ibrox team mates up

Jack Butland has confirmed definitively that he’s of Rangers true stock by deriding his own achievements at Rangers and comparing them unflatteringly to Allan McGregor and Andy Goram’s admitting his falls miles short and he wants more.

Speaking after he won the club’s fan-voted Player of the Season Award (by some distance we hasten to add), Butland was pleased to win that gong but admitted his club achievements were simply not good enough.

He said:

“What those guys have gone before have all done is won, they have been serial winners, they have continually done so. I have one to my name, that is not enough.”

This is exactly the winner mentality Rangers need, players who aren’t just always ‘disappointed’ when they don’t win, but have a steely determination to win more, who are bred to do so, and are of the quality that they can back it up.

Butland had never won a thing before Rangers, but he’s a born winner – he’s a top goalkeeper from the Premier League and while he never played for a winning club before Rangers, it’s clearly inherent in him to win.

And loser Premier League clubs like Forest are interested, as we know:

“Like I said before, if you’re performing well things like that ultimately do come. I’m not blowing smoke up my arse, but I’ve been at top clubs in England before. I’ve been in England squads before. I guess that reputation has always been there. But then you have to perform. I feel like I’ve done that and that’s always going to put you in conversations. To generate interest means things are going well and things are going to plan. That’s what I want to do, I want to play well and if I’m playing well, those conversations will happen. As I’ve said, I’m happy here and I’m loving my time here.”

Sure, we know Butland is vulnerable, even if he signs that new deal, but importantly he has a taste for winning and knows he falls miles short of McGregor and Goram’s gongs.

Who the best of the three is doesn’t matter, the trophies do, and Butland wants more.

Won’t win them with Nottingham Forest, that’s for sure.
