Jack Butland latest as Lee Carsley reveals England squad

Jack Butland’s slim hopes of an England recall under interim manager Lee Carsley have been well and truly dashed after being overlooked once more in what is probably the final nail in Butland’s England coffin.

Dean Henderson (Crystal Palace), Jordan Pickford (Everton) and Nick Pope (Newcastle United) were all preferred over Butland, who despite a solid start to his new season at Rangers still cannot get the recognition with the national side that he craves.

The notion that Gareth Southgate and the clique might have been part of it was laid to rest as a bunch of Southgate choices were themselves overlooked for this international break, but Carsley still followed the ex-England manager’s lead in ignoring anything in the Scottish Premiership.

In many ways it’s hard to blame them – despite Butland’s past career, he was very much a lower-to-midtable Premier League goalie, with a very weak Stoke side as it was, while Crystal Palace and Man Utd weren’t interested in playing him much if at all.

He really doesn’t have a pedigree with the national side and the three called up are experienced Premier League players these days with Pope back in the Newcastle picture following injury, even if Pickford has by far the most caps.

In the end, Carsley like Southgate has overlooked Butland, and clearly isn’t interested – he has also axed Arsenal’s (soon to be Southampton’s) Aaron Ramsdale from the squad as well.

Butland is unlikely to ever get a call up from the national team again, at least, not while playing in the Scottish Premiership.
