Well, what a memorable start to the season that was.
I can’t say I was overly surprised; the girls have been working extremely hard all through pre-season and to get a win in our first game of the season really sets the tone for us now and is the reward we deserve.
To win against Sydney FC, the reigning Premiers, in front of our home crowd does add that extra element of confidence that we can really shake the competition again this season.
I said at the season launch that we see ourselves as a team that expects to win and I feel we were able to send a strong message at the weekend.
A big thank you of course goes out to the Adelaide United faithful who showed in droves on a dreary late Sunday afternoon to watch us at ServiceFM Stadium.
You are the best fans around and we can’t wait for our next home game to play in front of you all again.
I’m incredibly proud of the group who put in such a professional performance, and obviously I am stoked for Milsy (Emilia Murray) who has been working so hard for a couple of years now. For her to pop up and score her first goal, a late winner no less, I could see just how much that meant to her and the group, it was such an amazing feeling in the rooms after the game!
A special shoutout also to another youngster, Ella (Tonkin), who was so strong at the heart of the defence alongside Maruschka (Waldus) and Paige (Hayward), and Annie (Annalee Grove) was at another level in goal.
I could not fault anyone out there, every player fought so hard for the badge.
But despite the win, we know there is a long road yet ahead of us.
The focus has quickly shifted to a tough road trip to Perth Glory this weekend, and it is always a difficult place to go and play.
We know we’re going to need to be at our best, and for every game this season because it’s such a strong competition which is what I really like to see.
The greatest thing is that this group all wants the same thing; to deliver this proud city its first Championship and will leave no stone unturned to do so.
