Africa Cup of Nations hosts Ivory Coast have sacked coach Jean-Louis Gasset despite sneaking through to the last-16 of the tournament as one of the best third-placed teams.

Gasset was sacked on Wednesday, two days after the Elephants lost 4-0 to Equatorial Guinea – the heaviest home defeat in their history.

But Morocco’s win over Zambia later on Wednesday meant the tournament hosts progressed to the knockout phase anyway, and will now face holders Senegal on Monday.

Ivory Coast will be led for the rest of their tournament by Emerse Fae, one of Gasset’s coaches, on an interim basis.

The country’s football federation said it had “terminated the contracts” of 70-year-old Gasset and his assistant Ghislain Printant “due to insufficient results”.
