Jean-Louis Gasset has emphasised the importance of mentality during his presentation as Olympique de Marseille manager on Tuesday.

Gasset becomes Marseille’s fourth manager of the season after Marcelino, Jacques Abordonado and Gennaro Gattuso. The latter was relieved of his duties after Sunday’s defeat against Stade Brestois. OM are yet to win in Ligue 1 in 2024, with their last win coming on 17th December 2023.

Currently 9th in Ligue 1, Gasset, who was himself relieved of his duties as Ivory Coast manager midway through the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), has highlighted the importance of mentality in getting the club looking back up the table.

Gasset in the dugout to face Shakhtar

“I saw the group with the president and I said why I was here. I said that I had succeeded with worse teams. Mentality is 80% of performance. I told each one of them that they had to do a bit more and told them to look in the mirror. When you concede goals like the ones that Marseille have conceded, these are individual errors; the system isn’t the problem. It’s a mental problem when you concede goals after the 90th minute,” said the Frenchman, who will be in the dugout as OM host Shakhtar Donetsk at the Vélodrome on Thursday night.
