Sunday 3 March 2019 marks exactly 29 years since one of English football’s most iconic goals of the 1990s.

And by iconic, we mean hilarious.

Manchester City travelled to face Nottingham Forest at the City Ground and at one point in the second half, City goalkeeper Andy Dibble made a routine save.

But as Dibble held the ball in his outstretched right hand ready to punt it downfield, Forest midfielder Gary Crosby crept up behind him, and here’s what happened next.

City’s players and manager Howard Kendall protested furiously to the referee but the goal was allowed to stand and it ended up being enough to seal the three points for the hosts.

Crosby is now assistant manager to Nigel Clough at Burton Albion and ahead of the Brewers’ EFL Cup semi-final clash with City in January this year, he reflected on his controversial goal.

“All I thought as I got up and started running back on to the pitch was: ‘He’s got to have that ball in two hands’,” Crosby told the Guardian.

“Whether the referee actually saw it, or to what degree he knew what had happened, I don’t know.”

Dibble, on the other hand, later admitted that the goal would haunt him for the rest of his career but he did at least have enough of a sense of humour to donate his right glove to be auctioned off at the testimonial of Forest goalkeeper Steve Sutton a few months afterwards.
