Despite being only 17 years of age, the winger Lamine Yamal has emerged as one of the most important parts of the FC Barcelona team for the last two years.
After becoming a regular starter under Xavi Hernandez, he is also a key player for Hansi Flick this season, and his importance is showcased by the fact that he is the player with the fourth-highest number of minutes this season, after Jules Kounde, Pedri, and Raphinha.
As Mundo Deportivo has reported, the youngster recently appeared in an interview with ESPN, and talked about different aspects of the season he is having with the Blaugrana team.
In this interview, the youngster answered his critics on why he does not run a lot in games, and clarified that this was his method of remain sharp for the most decisive moments:
“One thing I’ve learned this year is how to manage myself… Many times, people ask why I don’t move for ten minutes. In the end, there are moments and games where it’s not necessary to be running all the time; you have to know how to manage yourself during the game and throughout the season, knowing what you should do and what you shouldn’t do during training.
It’s something I’ve learned, and the truth is, I’m feeling great heading into this moment.”
The Barcelona winger also expressed his complete confidence in his team’s chances of winning every trophy this season:
“I am one of those people who always trusts in their team. From the beginning of the season, I always go for the maximum. If we can win the treble, then the treble it is.
Now, it won’t be any different. It’s not about overconfidence or anything, but you have to trust yourself because if you say the other team will win, I don’t know why you even step onto the field. So yes, we can win the treble, we are Barça, and we’ve won it before. Hopefully.”
Yamal admitted that playing at such a high level still sometimes feels like a dream:
“I just try to enjoy, play, enjoy, and that’s it… It’s like a dream… It’s true that when you get home, you think, wow, I’ve played in a European Championship final. It’s something incredible.”
It is definitely good to see such a young player being so optimistic about his team’s chances of winning everything. But if these treble hopes are to become a reality, Yamal himself will have to play an important role in this crucial stage of the campaign.
