The Greens need another forward or two as they try to battle against Championship relegation
Plymouth Argyle are in desperate need of some additions to their squad before the transfer window slams shut on February 3, with a player who can put the ball in the back of the net a priority for the shot-shy Pilgrims.
Miron Muslic’s side have netted a league-low 25 goals from their 27 games in the Championship to date, and with just one strike in the three matches under their new boss so far, there are plenty of concerns about matters in the final third between now and the end of the season.
With the former Cercle Brugge coach wanting to bring in players with a physical presence up top and an aggression that will unsettle opposing defenders, there will surely be one or two faces coming into Home Park before too long, in the hope of adding to the threat the Greens pose when going forward.
Alassana Jatta is the man said to fit the bill at this moment in time, with the Gambian proving himself to be a force to be reckoned with in the fourth tier over the past 12 months.
With the troubles at the business end of the field not going away, Argyle have moved to test County’s resolve regarding their front man this winter, with The Guardian reporting that the Devon outfit have lodge a £750,000 bid earlier this week.
That sum is said to be below the seven-figure price tag that the Magpies have put on their striker’s head, with the likes of Portsmouth and Bolton Wanderers both said to also be sniffing around.
Frontman Jatta has proven himself to be a top goal-getter since his move from Danish outfit Viborg in the January transfer window of 2024, with 17 goals in 30 league appearances proving just what a handful he is to opposing defenders.
Standing at well over six foot, the big man will add another dimension to the Argyle attack, with the early signs of Muslic’s tenure at Home Park proving that he prefers a more direct style of football than that experienced under Wayne Rooney.
Whether he is netting with his head or his feet, the attacked certainly knows where the back of the net is, and his awareness of his teammates around him makes him the focal point of the County frontline, with Argyle needing a physical presence such as his to give defenders a torrid time throughout the 90 minutes.
Since Muslic took over, he has had to play with barely fit strikers, as Michael Obafemi and Ryan Hardie have both had their own concerns, while Muhamed Tijani continues to be stuck on the sidelines.
That lack of presence up top has seen Michael Baidoo operating in the number nine role at times since his arrival from Elfsborg, with a lack of personnel to challenge for aerial duels leaving the opposition largely unscathed over the past few weeks, much to Muslic’s ire.
In Jatta, Argyle will have a player who will thrive off the physical battle with the best that the second tier has to offer, and give as much as he gets in terms of barraging defenders and causing a nuisance of himself.
Not only that, but his nous for being in the right place at the right time, and pinpoint precision when setting his sights on goal could make him a major asset to an Argyle side that has no player scoring more than three goals this season, and the lowest xG in the division by quite some distance.
Things are getting quite desperate at Home Park right now, with the mood turning sour after the 5-0 trouncing to Burnley in midweek, and by no means is Jatta going to be the answer to the situation solely on his own, but his addition would help to transform an attacking unit that has been anything but fearsome in recent weeks.
