The Reds went into the game with a good home record against The Blues. They kept Chelsea out for 37 minutes before being breached on three occasions in the remainder of the game.
When speaking to the media after the match, Liverpool boss Beard admitted his frustration with the scoreline but felt that injuries made the challenge more difficult.
“It’s frustrating to lose,” Beard said. “I think if you look at the players that I’ve got missing at the moment, we are really thin on the ground. I don’t like losing games, the players don’t like losing games, so it hurts. It doesn’t matter if it’s Chelsea, Man City, we want to win.”
Despite the defeat, Beard still felt that there were some positives to take away from the game.
He said “I think there are positives to take. We’ve got to cut out the little errors that led to their goals today, but there are plenty of positives we can take.
“They are a top side and if you give them opportunities like we did, especially the second goal today, then you are going to get punished.”
Liverpool made the permanent move from Prenton Park to The Totally Wicked Stadium in St Helens during the summer. The Reds are still settling into their new surroundings and Beard believes that a first win will help the process.
He said “I think Prenton Park was unique; the atmosphere there, especially the fans behind the dugout and stuff like that. I think we had the Chelsea fans behind us today and we’ve had our fans all on the other side of the ground, but it’s a fantastic facility. We just need to get that first win here; once we get that, then I think we’ll be alright.”
Liverpool are back in action on Sunday afternoon when they face Everton in a Merseyside derby at Goodison Park.
