31 years ago today Marco van Basten scored not just the greatest volley of all-time, but the best goal in any final anywhere, ever.

Netherlands had never won a major international tournament in their history, but went into Euro 88 as one of the favourites.

After a late winner from the Milan man downed West Germany in the semi-finals, it was the Swan of Utrecht who was the hero again in the final as he completed a 2-0 win over the Soviet Union with the most outrageous goal there will ever be.

It was brilliant then, and 31 years later, it’s brilliant now.

What a player.
