Highlights

  • Leeds United relied on familiar faces to secure their win against Plymouth Argyle in the FA Cup fourth round replay.
  • Summerville and Rutter proved their worth as they played a crucial role in Leeds' victory, highlighting their importance to the club's promotion chances.
  • Both players have become key contributors this season, showing significant improvement since dropping to the Championship and becoming mainstays in the starting XI.

Leeds United's recent FA Cup fourth round replay away to Plymouth Argyle allowed Daniel Farke to rotate and give fringe players a run-out. However, it was the usual suspects they relied on to take them through to the fifth round.

In an ideal world, Leeds wouldn't have had to make the long trip south to face Plymouth on a cold February Tuesday night, but Farke saw it as a great opportunity to rest key players and give others some much-needed playing time.

Joel Piroe came back into the starting XI, while Mateo Joseph made his first start at senior level for the Whites.

However, with the scores tied at 1-1 at the end of 90 minutes, the game went to extra-time and Farke turned to some familiar faces to come to Leeds' rescue.

Georginio Rutter was introduced on the 82-minute mark, while Crysencio Summerville entered proceedings in second-half added time.

With the game in extra-time and the rain coming down at Home Park, it was always going to take something special to win the game for the Whites, and that's exactly what Summerville delivered.

The Dutchman picked up the ball on the left-hand side from Rutter before cutting inside Plymouth's defence and finding the top-corner. Rutter then put the game beyond any doubt with a goal from inside the area after Summerville returned the favour with an assist.

It's not unfair to say that the pair won Leeds the game on Tuesday night, and it emphasised just how important they are to the club's promotion chances.

Farke wouldn't have wanted to risk injuries to either player, but he was left with no option but to use them from the bench to avoid a potential cup exit.

The pair ran riot when they came on, and made Leeds a considerably better side. Farke would have already known that the pair are his key men, and it was blatantly obvious on Tuesday that they're a considerable upgrade on anyone else in Leeds' attacking department.

Both Summerville and Rutter have become mainstays in Leeds United's starting XI this season despite not always being regular starters at Premier League level last season.

Dutch winger Summerville started just 12 Premier League games last season, while Frenchman Rutter made just one league start after his summer move from Bundesliga side Hoffenheim.

As young players in a foreign country, it would have been easy to become disheartened by their lack of playing time, but since dropping to the Championship, the pair have become a real force.

for Leeds this season, starting 25 of them, scoring 12 goals and registering seven assists.

Meanwhile, Rutter has played 29 league games, starting 28, and has registered five goals and nine assists.

You can guarantee that if Leeds are to be promoted to the Premier League next season, that the pair will have a far greater impact than they did last time they graced the division.

At 22 and 21 years of age, respectively, the duo were always going to get better and there's no doubt that relegation to the Championship has been a blessing in disguise.
