Leeds United should be careful of short-circuiting their high-voltage forward line by adding an unnecessary component in January, according to Michael Brown.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider correspondent Russell Edge, the ex-Elland Road man was reacting to La Nazione reports that Marcelo Bielsa is considering a move for 23-year-old Fiorentina striker Christian Kouame.

His teammate, midfielder Erick Pulgar, is also being considered as part of a double swoop and the Whites are said to have a “concrete” interest in January loan-to-buy deals for both.

Brown responded by warning of the dangers of upsetting Leeds’ attacking balance but said that if an incoming forward was going to be a definite starter then a deal would make sense.

Asked if a new centre-forward needed to be a priority for Leeds, Brown told Football Insider: “It’s amazing, isn’t it? We’re always going, would you have another at the top of the pitch? And you would but it’s difficult in terms of where they fit in.

“I think Bamford’s got it down to a tee what Bielsa wants. Yes, you always want that extra one but I would say what’s the rush? Unless you know there’s a definite starter available, why bring someone in on loan?

“I think you can assess it towards the summer when the window will be more consistent. I think it’s timing – if you’ve got a definite starter then I’d be saying, ‘go and get them’.

“If there’s someone in a team that’s going to start every week, I think that’s what Leeds United need.”

Kouame, an Ivory Coast international, has spent the last two seasons in Florence, scoring twice in 20 Serie A appearances for the club.

If Kouame is to break into the Leeds starting XI, he would need to increase his rate of fire in order to usurp Patrick Bamford in the number 9 role, who has netted 10 times already this campaign.
