Vitinha (24) carried on his impressive second season at Paris Saint-Germain by scoring a vital goal during the club’s 4-1 victory (6-4 on aggregate) over rivals Barcelona to help secure passage into the semi-final of the Champions League.

The Portuguese midfielder struggled last year in his debut season with the club, there were reports that his status in the dressing room had taken a hit when he was engaged in a confrontation with then-teammate Lionel Messi (36) over a heavy tackle during training.

Messi and his supporters within the team were said to have taken exception to Vitinha, and the midfielder became a lightning rod for internal criticisms about the direction the club was heading in, with Neymar (31) said to have directed his frustrations at the midfielder after a loss to AS Monaco.

The departures of both Messi and Neymar, as well as the trust of new manager Luis Enrique, have helped Vitinha become a more settled figure this season, as well as a popular face in the dressing room. The knock-on effect has been more consistent performances from the midfielder who scored in both legs of the quarter-final.

However, Vitinha remains far from satisfied, speaking to CBS Sport after the victory over Barcelona, the midfielder was pleased but remained committed to the ultimate goal of winning the Champions League. “It’s incredible what we did. We are really happy, we’re in a semi-final. It’s a dream come true, but we want more.”
