‘It’s a disappointment’ – Christophe Galtier reacts to PSG’s 2-0 last 16 defeat to Bayern

Paris Saint-Germain manager Christophe Galtier says he is disappointed with his side’s 2-0 defeat to Bayern Munich in the Champions League.

Having suffered a 1-0 first-leg defeat at the Parc des Princes three weeks ago, the onus was on Galtier’s star-studded side to turn the tie around at the Allianz Arena.

However, second-half goals from Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting and Serge Gnabry ensured Bayern advanced to the quarter-finals at PSG’s expense.

They have been eliminated from the last-16 five times in seven seasons.

After watching his side fail to match the German champions for the second time, Galtier could not hold back his frustration when speaking to reporters after the game.

“We didn’t know how to score on our highlights,” Galtier said (via RMC). “We had a good first period where we had situations.

“We were able to compete well, we had highlights. But in the second half, we conceded this really stupid goal – at this level you have to be more lucid.

“Obviously we were under pressure from Bayern – we knew that. You shouldn’t be ashamed of playing long to break this pressure.

“After an hour, when you are behind, it’s starting to be difficult. I don’t know if it’s a lesson to be learned, but it’s a disappointment, a frustration. If we had opened the scoring, the match would have been different.”

PSG failed to find the back of the net over the course of the two-legged tie. Superstar attacking duo Lionel Messi and Kylian Mbappe barely had a sniff.

Vitinha had the chance to level matters with the goal at his mercy, but his effort lacked conviction, and it was cleared off the line by Matthijs De Ligt.

It is no secret that Galtier had a lot riding on this game, including his long-term future at the club with the PSG bosses desperate for success on the European stage.

Having failed to deliver, Galtier’s time as PSG boss may soon end, with the club already scouring for alternatives as they continue their hunt for the elusive trophy.
