Despite being only a few minutes away from a place in the UEFA Champions League final, FC Barcelona had to suffer heartbreak last night as they were defeated 4-3 by Inter Milan in the extra time of the second leg of the semi-final tie.

The Blaugranes came back from a two-goal deficit in the second half of the game, and even went ahead in the 87th minute with a goal from Raphinha. However, Inter Milan got back into the game as Francesco Acerbi scored in injury time to take the game to extra time. The Italians then scored another goal in extra time to win the game and the tie.

Frenkie de Jong shares his feelings

As Mundo Deportivo has reported, the Barcelona midfielder Frenkie de Jong admitted that this goal, scored at the very end of the regulation time, proved difficult for his side to deal with. Speaking to the media after the game, the Dutchman said:

“It’s a bit of an empty feeling right now. I think we made a great comeback, as we’ve done a few times this season, and when you concede a goal two minutes from the end, it’s hard to deal with.”

Barcelona had the right approach

The midfielder believed their approach to the game was right, but the team was ultimately unlucky:

“We said that we had to keep playing the way we had been. We played well, although we didn’t create chances, we could have controlled the game better, but we kept insisting on what we were doing and we managed it. We came back, things were going our way, but then they scored on us.”

The Dutch star also admitted that this will be a hard game for him to watch again:

“In general, I don’t watch the whole match again, just my plays. This one will be hard to watch again.”

There is no doubt that the players would be feeling gutted after having come so close to the final. However, they need to keep their spirits high as they still have to compete for the La Liga title, and have a crucial match in this competition scheduled for this weekend, and being a captain, Frenkie de Jong needs to play his part.
