Oh, how things can change in two decades.
On Wednesday it was revealed that David Beckham is set to receive a special award from Uefa in honour of his services to football.
On August 22, 1998 though, the Manchester United midfielder was officially the Most Hated Man in England.
That summer, the sarong-wearing, Spice Girls-loving winger had been sent off against Argentina in the World Cup, and essentially – in the public’s eyes at least – sent Glenn Hoddle’s side packing.
The abuse was obscene after that, and on United’s first away game of the season against West Ham, an effigy (complete with sarong) of Beckham was hung outside Upton Park.
Despite the boos, the obscenities and the death threats, Beckham would go on to have probably his best ever campaign as a player, and helped guide Alex Ferguson’s side to an unprecedented Treble.
You can’t say fairer than that.
