Italy World Cup winner Alessandro Altobelli warns that Luciano Spalletti’s project as the Azzurri national team coach is ‘over’ already.
The Azzurri were knocked out of the EURO 2024 Round of 16, and there are still plenty of reactions to a disappointing result.
“We had to do more; we were the only ones responsible,” Altobelli, a 1982 World Cup winner, told Virgilio Sport.
“We qualified for the knock-out stage at the last second and then we were dominated by Switzerland. They are a good team, but some questions need an answer if we can’t beat them.”
Is it mostly Spalletti’s responsibility?
“I’ve heard him complain because he didn’t have enough time, but if you are offered the national team and you think players are not up to the task, you should not accept,” argued the former striker.
Does this mean the ex-Napoli boss should have resigned?
“Not many coaches have done so; courage is needed. He and Gravina said they want to continue the project, but this one is over already. The coach is praised when the team wins, but when there are defeats, he must accept criticism,” concluded Altobelli.
