Why Italy coaches visited Atalanta on Tuesday

The Italy delegation are preparing for Gattuso’s first test as national team head coach, which will be a World Cup qualifier against Estonia on September 5 and then another against Israel a few days later on September 8.

The Italy coaches will have kept a close eye on Atalanta’s cohort of Azzurri representatives, including the likes of Gianluca Scamacca, Raoul Bellanova, Davide Zappacosta, Daniel Maldini, Giorgio Scalvini and Marco Carnesecchi.

This is not the first time that Gattuso and his colleague have gone out of their way to observe training at a Serie A side. They have also been to visit Lazio, Sassuolo and Udinese in recent weeks.

Coincidentally, the Italy staff were not the only ‘special’ arrivals at Zingonia on Tuesday, as the recently-nomadic Ademola Lookman has also returned to the club following a two-week unauthorised absence.
