Defender Alessandro Bastoni has received praise for his classy display and “mouthwatering” assist for Inter Milan against Torino.
Rome-based newspaper Corriere dello Sport give the Italian international a score of 7.5/10 in the player ratings for the match, via FCInterNews.
Bastoni is, at least, nominally, a central defender.
That is not really how the 25-year-old played yesterday evening, however.
In the opening stages of the match, Bastoni had to put in a disciplined display on both sides of the ball.
But a red card to Torino defender Guillermo Maripan changed the equation quite a bit.
With Inter enjoying a numerical advantage over the Granata, they had a spare man in possession.
And Bastoni was often the player who got himself free. And the former Atalanta and Parma defender will certainly have been the player Inter wanted to have the time and space to make things happen with the ball.
Bastoni’s first big contribution for Inter was his “mouthwatering” assist for Inter’s opening goal.
The Italian international could not have placed his cross much better for Marcus Thuram to head home for the first goal of his hattrick.
Then, Bastoni also played a major role in Inter and Thuram’s second goal.
The 25-year-old may not have assisted it as he had done the first. But it was not a coincidence that the goal came via Inter’s left-hand side.
Bastoni played in defender Francesco Acerbi with a perfect one-touch pass after a clever exchange between the two members of the back three.
This gave Acerbi the time and space to play a ball into the Torino penalty area for Thuram.
Bastoni shone with his passing and switches of play all night as well.
It may have been Thuram who took the plaudits for the victory. But Bastoni’s fingerprints were on the win just as much.
