Italy eventually managed to qualify from Group C at Euro 2024 in dramatic circumstances after a last-gasp equaliser in their final game against Croatia.

Italy’s tournament has been a real rollercoaster so far. After conceding the quickest goal in Euros history to Albania on Matchday One, they eventually managed a 2-1 victory before succumbing to a 1-0 defeat to Spain in their second game. Having fallen behind to a Luka Modric strike against Croatia, it seemed like the Azzurri’s tournament was going to come to an end until a late equaliser from Mattia Zaccagni secured second spot.

Group B – Matchweek One

Albania almost caused a shock on Matchday One against Italy as they scored early on to take an unexpected lead. Normal service was quickly resumed however as goals from Alessandro Bastoni and Nicolo Barella turned the game on it’s head before the twenty minute mark and secured three points for the Azzurri.

Group B – Matchweek Two

It may have only finished 1-0, but the reality of this match was that their seemed to be a gap in quality between Italy and Spain. An eventual own goal from Bologna defender Riccardo Calafiori was the difference on the scoreline, but this performance showed the Azzurri how much they need to improve if they want to go deep into the tournament.

Group B – Matchweek Three

In perhaps the most dramatic game of the tournament so far, Italy were able to progress thanks to a last-gasp strike from Mattia Zaccagni. Luka Modric missed a penalty but quickly redeemed himself to give Croatia the lead, but Vatreni couldn’t quite hold on and the Azzurri were able to celebrate at full-time as a 1-1 draw was enough to earn them second place in the group.

Round of 16

Switzerland are Italy’s opponents in the Round of 16 and given recent results between the two teams, the Azzurri will be hoping history can repeat itself. Italy were 3-0 winners when the two teams met at the last European Championships and they’ve gone unbeaten in the last 11 meetings between the two nations. El Nati were impressive in the group stages though, beating Hungary before drawing with Scotland and Germany – who they would’ve beaten but for a late Niclas Fullkrug equaliser.
