A nice move ended with Elisa Bartoli getting to the ball ahead of goalkeeper Peng Shimeng to tee up Valentina Giacinti for a simple finish.

She had came close just moments before that too, whistling an effort narrowly wide after slack defending but Italy still had to be wary at the other end.

Only a fine fingertip stop from Laura Giuliani prevented an equaliser from a brilliant dipping Wang Yan volley.

Valentina Bergamaschi went close before half-time for the Azzurre but just four minutes after the restart, they did get their second.

Aurora Galli had already shown this summer what she is capable of but when she was given too much room on the edge of the area, she picked her spot and found the corner.

The winner of the Netherlands and Japan clash now await Italy in the quarter-final on 29 June.
