Inter defender Bastoni is currently part of the Italy squad for the international break just begun.

Azzurri coach Spalletti decided to call the 25-year-old up.

However, it is unclear whether Bastoni will be able to play ant part in Italy’s two fixtures during the break.

Italy face France and Israel in UEFA Nations League matches over the next couple weeks.

Bastoni has picked up a muscle problem. This forced the 25-year-old off in the second half of Inter’s last match before the break, a 4-0 Serie A win over Atalanta.

By all accounts, the problem is not a very serious one.

But at the same time, there will be no desire to take any risks with Bastoni’s fitness.

Reports indicate that the Inter defender will undergo medical tests with the national team medical staff in the coming days.

These should shed light on whether Bastoni will be able to play in either of Italy’s fixtures during the break, or whether he could even be in for an early return to Inter to rest and recover in training.

Spalletti: “Bastoni More Optimistic Than The Medical Staff” Regarding Injury Scare

The exact nature of Bastoni’s condition will remain up in the air until the Inter defender undergoes his medical tests.

Spalletti said of Bastoni that “We saw what happened during the match.”

“Gigi Buffon called him, and then called me,” continued the Italy coach. Buffon is a part of the Italy national team delegation, and liaises with the players.

“The medical staff had been a bit pessimistic,” Spalletti admitted of the Inter defender.

“But he was a lot more optimistic that he will feel all better within a few days.”

“This was already the case on Saturday morning.”

“That’s still the way he feels today,” Spalletti said. “So we’ll evaluate him one day at a time, and the correct decisions will be made.”
