Luciano Spalletti is set to resign from his role as Italy head coach with immediate effect.
Italy began their 2026 World Cup qualification campaign in disastrous fashion after a 3-0 defeat at Norway on Friday evening. The defeat continued a poor run of form for the Azzurri, who are winless in four games across all competitions.
Spalletti was appointed Italy manager in September 2023, having led Napoli to the Serie A title the previous season. However, he has won less than half of his 23 games in charge (47%) and has faced criticism for the team’s performances. Last summer, the Italians suffered a disappointing last-16 exit to Switzerland at the European Championship.
Italy are under pressure to reach next summer’s World Cup after missing the 2018 and 2022 editions. Following the defeat to Norway, Spalletti suggested his future was in doubt.
“I need to talk to [the FIGC president] about their intentions, their view on the decision I make,” the Italy head coach said.
“I chose this group because I thought there was quality, but if we are so fragile that we don’t keep an offside trap, we don’t chase down opponents, then there is a lack of confidence. Quality isn’t enough without that.
“There are always worries, because after a performance like that, you clearly have to ask yourself questions and realise there are problems. But you have to face them, because there is no other possibility.”
Fabrizio Romano has now confirmed that Spalletti is considering leaving his position with immediate effect. Italy face Moldova in their second World Cup qualifier of the campaign tomorrow evening.
