Italy and Turkey are now expected to win the candidacy to host Euro 2032 and the move could be made official soon.
It has already been confirmed that the Euros in 2028 will be hosted by Ireland and England and recently, Evelina Christillin, additional member of UEFA in the FIFA Council, has revealed that Italy and Turkey will host the tournament in 2032.
She recently spoke to Radio Anch’io Sport on Rai Radio 1 (via TMW) and revealed that the vote will take place tomorrow and a total of five cities will be able to host the tournament, with Italy likely to face some problems at their end about renovating some stadiums and their structures.
She said: “Tomorrow there will be no surprise, the 2032 European Championships will be assigned to Italy and Turkey, it’s a done deal. The field has been left free to Great Britain and Ireland for 2028 and consequently it is the green light for Italy and Turkey for Euro 2032 has been decided and shared. The vote is scheduled for tomorrow, we will be in Nyon, there will be a short presentation made by our delegation made up of FIGC president Gravina, Gigi Buffon and Ilaria D’Amico. And then we will work on the stadiums.”
Christillin further stated that the FAs of both Italy and Turkey have agreed that five cities can host the tournament and further work is yet to be done, when it comes to stadiums.
“Only five cities will be able to host the European Championship. It is an agreement made at UEFA by the Italian and Turkish federations, even if there is not yet a definitive choice on the five cities. There will be a kind of contest: a way to to compete to renovate or make completely new stadiums, which are Italy’s main problem. Italy and Turkey are two candidates that UEFA welcomes, the Italian problem concerns the stadiums. There will be a sort of tendering of the ten cities, which will have to present their projects by the end of 2026.”
Issues around human rights in host countries has been a much-talked about issue in football recently and the same could be the case for Turkey. Christillian was asked about it and she stated:
“In this sense I don’t think there will be further repercussions. Let’s not forget that the last edition of the Champions League final took place in Turkey.”
