Italian Media Question Whether Juventus Penalty Vs Inter Was Reviewable By VAR Incident | OneFootball

Italian media have questioned whether the late penalty awarded to Juventus in the Bianconeri’s clash with Inter yesterday evening was an appropriate moment for the intervention of VAR.

This according to today’s print edition of Milan-based newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport, who argue that it was far from clear whether there was enough in the foul for which the spot kick was awarded to warrant the overruling of the initial on-pitch decision that it was not a penalty.

Inter wing-back Denzel Dumfries made contact with the leg of Juventus left-back Alex Sandro with a clumsy challenge on the edge of the box as the Bianconeri were searching for an equalizer, but referee Maurizio Mariani initially waved play on.

Mariani was advised by VAR to take another look at the incident, however, and he deemed the challenge to be both enough of a foul and to be clearly inside the penalty area, to award a spot kick.

Juventus equalized from the ensuing spot kick and the two sides shared the points, but the Nerazzurri players and staff were clearly angry with the decision.

For the Gazzetta, the contact between the two players involved in the incident is clear and a foul can be discerned in the slow-motion replay, but the newspaper questions whether there was any need to review the incident after the initial decision.

Mariani appeared to have seen the challenge and deemed it not to be a penalty in real time, but only when the slow-motion footage was watched multiple times did he decide to reverse his decision and give a penalty.
