Italian media have criticized Inter Milan coach Simone Inzaghi for taking off Marcus Thuram as early as he did against Real Sociedad.

Today’s print edition of Milan-based newspaper Corriere della Sera, via FCInterNews, question the coach’s approach in the Champions League group stage clash.

For much of the first half of yesterday evening’s match, Thuram was Inter’s most threatening player.

The 26-year-old’s dribbling ability and turn of pace allowed him to initiate several dangerous attacks.

Therefore, it perhaps came as a surprise to see Thuram come off during the second half.

The Frenchman exited the pitch as part of a wholesale attacking change. Lautaro Martinez and Marko Arnautovic replaced Thuram and Alexis Sanchez.

There was little criticism of Inzaghi for throwing Martinez on.

The Inter captain’s absence had been keenly felt during the first half of the match against La Real.

And Martinez showed Inter what they’d been missing with his second half performance.

The Argentine had a couple very good chances. His eye for goal as well as linkup play gave the La Real backline much more to think about than Sanchez had done.

But the aspect that has puzzled Italian media is why Thuram came off.

The Frenchman did not have the chance to spend a single minute on the pitch together with Martinez.

Considering that the pair are the first-choice strike partnership at Inter, this was the cause for a lot of disappointment.

Perhaps if the two had been on the pitch at the same time, it would have enabled Inter to break through and find the goal that would have given them the win over La Real, meaning they’d have topped their group and enjoyed an easier draw in the next round.

But that’s not what Inzaghi decided.
