Inter can still count themselves as favourites for the Serie A title, but must regain their attacking consistency and quickly pick themselves up following a derby loss to AC Milan.

This according to today’s print edition of Milan-based newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport, who argue that the Nerazzurri remain the favourites for the Scudetto even after their derby loss to AC Milan, but only if they get back to their best.

The Rossoneri gained a much stronger foothold in the Scudetto race with their comeback win over their city rivals on Saturday, but the Nerazzurri are still a point ahead of them, with a game in hand.

The Nerazzurri face Napoli, also just a point behind them, next weekend in a match that will be certain to have further Scudetto implications.

For the Gazzetta, the outcome of the derby hasn’t fundamentally altered the complexion of the Scudetto hierarchy even though it has made the race look much tighter.

However, they emphasize that the Nerazzurri had scored an average of 2.57 goals per game across the first half of the season but have managed just 1.25 on average since returning from the winter break.

This must change and the team must get back to their previous levels, and they must also get back to keeping clean sheets if they are to make good on their status as favourites.

Meanwhile, the Nerazzurri face Roma in the Coppa Italia, Napoli in Serie A, and Liverpool in the Champions League in their next few matches in quick succession.

If Inter are able to get the results they need and get their confidence back, then they will be back in the driver’s seat for the run-in of the Scudetto chase, but they must first get back to showing their best.
