Italian journalist Stefano Agresti feels that while Inter should have had a positive evening away to Sampdoria in Serie A yesterday evening, they instead did league leaders Napoli another favour which they hardly need.
Writing in his column in today’s print edition of Milan-based newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport, via FCInter1908, Agresti suggested that the Nerazzurri’s slip-up only further confirmed that this is Napoli’s season in Serie A.
Inter may not have turned the heat up all that much on Napoli even if they had beaten Sampdoria, but a run of wins could at least be enough to keep the league leaders honest.
Instead, the Nerazzurri dropped even more points in the league, giving the Partenopei more margin for error.
The truth is that, based on the season so far, Napoli have hardly looked like a team who need this margin for error, as Agresti notes.
“All the presumptive rivals have decided to lend Napoli a hand,” the journalist writes, “and it’s something completely superfluous and not something they asked for.”
“Confirmation of this came from Genoa,” he continued.
“Indeed, who would have ever imagined Inter failing to beat this Sampdoria team who have been struggling on and off the pitch?”
“Everything seemed ideally setup for a nice evening for Inter,” he continues, “they could have extended their lead on their Champions League rivals, LuLa were back, maybe they could have gotten a Lukaku goal ahead of their match against Porto.”
“Instead, Inzaghi didn’t do any better than 0-0 against their old rivals.”
“Interisti seemed to lose their heads, particularly Barella who spent the whole time protesting to teammates and opponents until Lukaku cursed him out,” he notes.
