Italian Journalist Maurizio Compagnoni: “Inter Striker Lautaro Martinez Only Fault Is He Hasn’t Improved In Last 12 Months”
Italian journalist Maurizio Compagnoni believes that Inter striker Lautaro Martinez has shown a high level this season, but that he hasn’t noticeably improved over the last year.
Speaking to Italian broadcaster Sky Sport Italia, the journalist gave his thoughts on the Nerazzurri so far this season and also gave his impression on Martinez in particular and the Argentine’s contributions at the club.
Martinez became a major contributor in his second season at Inter, starting regularly in both of Antonio Conte’s seasons at the club including last season in which he helped the club to the Scudetto.
The Argentine signed a new deal with the Nerazzurri taking him until the end of June 2026 earlier this campaign, signalling his continued commitment to playing an important role at the club.
Compagnoni believes that the 24-year-old has all the quality to continue to play a major part at Inter, but if there’s a knock against him it’s that he has not taken the next step yet.
Of the Nerazzurri’s form, he stated that “Inter are convinced and solid at the moment. Convinced of their strength and of having a real leader at the helm – there is already a certain understanding between Inzaghi, who has inherited a major legacy from Conte, and the locker room.”
“It’s as though he’s been in Milan for a lifetime,” he explained of the former Lazio coach. “And solid: maybe at the beginning they weren’t, something Inzaghi had to fix.”
“Now they seem to be in the best shape,” he added, “they don’t drop off for even a match and I don’t find big differences between the first three squads. But if I had to choose, I think the Nerazzurri is the strongest.”
He called Martinez a “Complete player, very strong and still quite young. If we want to find a fault, despite the quality of his performances over the past twelve months, we could say that he has not grown. He has the potential to do even better.”
And of stricken Inter midfielder Christian Eriksen, Compagnoni said that he is a “Fantastic player. He was really showing his worth at Inter after an initial period of difficulty.”
“It must be said, however, that after a period of poor form, Calhanoglu is doing very well,” he added.
