Italian journalist Mario Sconcerti believes that if Antonio Conte had stayed as Inter coach, he would have won the Serie A title again this season.

Speaking to Italian broadcaster TMW Radio, Sconcerti gave the view that if last season’s coach had stayed on it would have guaranteed continuity and the Nerazzurri would not have dropped points early on in the season as Simone Inzaghi settled in.

Inzaghi has enjoyed a strong first season at Inter, especially considering the expectations at the start of the season, having worked quickly to implement his ideas and shape the team in his own image.

Triumphs in the Coppa Italia and the Supercoppa Italiana as well as progression to the knockout rounds of the Champions League and at the very least a second place finish in Serie A were the rewards for the coach’s work.

However, there were some growing pains in the first few months of the season, and Sconcerti believes that this is where the Serie A title was lost, provided Inter do not overtake AC Milan on the final day of the season.

“I think Inzaghi is a great coach,” he said. “But I think Conte would have won this title, because I think Inzaghi paid for having made the leap up in the summer.”

“Remember that Inzaghi dropped nine points over the first few matches,” he pointed out, “do you think that this could be due to the fact that the team was not yet his team? I don’t think Conte would have dropped those points.”
