Italian journalist Mario Sconcerti believes that Inter showed with their 3-0 win over Roma yesterday that they are a cut above the rest of Serie A.

Writing in his column in today’s print edition of Milan-based newspaper Corriere della Sera, Sconcerti suggested that the Nerazzurri proved that they are now tactically capable of competing in the Champions League in a way that their Italian rivals are not.

Inter’s form of five wins from five since the return from the international break has seen them secure a place in the Champions League knockout rounds with a game to spare despite a poor start to the group stage campaign.

And in Serie A, Simone Inzaghi’s team have moved from being third place and seven points off top spot to second and just a point behind city rivals AC Milan.

Apart from the positive results, the manner of the performances against all different kinds of opponents has been enough to convince Sconcerti that the Nerazzurri are now at a point where they must try and deliver in Europe.

“Inter today play almost unheard-of football in Italy,” the journalist writes, “at the moment Inzaghi is even more important than his players because he gets performances from everyone which are beyond what they have given before and have both intensity and intelligence.”

He goes on that “The most surprising thing on Saturday was the dominant way in which Inter proved themselves. It was their best match since the defeat against Lazio at the Olimpico, and they are perhaps becoming a European-quality team.”

“The quality of opposition matters,” he concludes. “But if a team that walks the league like this were not strong also in Europe, it would be bad news for everyone.”
