Italian journalist Marco Bucciantini believes that Inter lost out on the Serie A title race with the points that they dropped over the second half of the season.

Speaking to Italian broadcaster Sky Sport Italia, Bucciantini gave the view that the Nerazzurri failed to make good on the promise of the first half of the season to see out the title race against AC Milan.

Inter didn’t quite get off to a perfect start to their season, falling behind both Milan and Napoli, but in November and December really picked up the pace to be the outstanding team in the Italian top flight.

The Nerazzurri were on course to finish with over ninety points if they could pick up points at the same rate, and looked to have been in a strong position to go on and win the Scudetto.

However, some dropped points from January onwards, particularly during February and March, gave the Rossoneri an opportunity to catch back up and win the title in the end.

“Inter took 46 points over the first half of the season, and 38 in the second, those are the points that they left behind,” Bucciantini said.

He went on that “For me Inter have had a great season. To win the Scudetto they’d have needed to take 87 points without Conte, Lukaku, Eriksen, or Hakimi, that’s a lot.”
