Inter coach Antonio Conte has been defended by Panorama journalist Giovanni Capuano after coming under fire for claiming that Inter had not yet reached the level of Juventus.

Speaking in his pre-match press conference today ahead of the Derby d’Italia, Conte suggested that whilst Inter had gone some way to closing the gap on the Bianconeri, without success in Serie A they were yet to reach their level.

Following his claims, Conte received the backing of Capuano after the journalist took to social media to express his agreement with the tactician’s statement.

Capuano insisted that until Inter were able to challenge Juventus consistently at the top of the Serie A table and bring the Bianconeri’s streak of nine Scudetti to an end, they would continue to endure a gap behind their rivals.

The journalist was adamant that there was little else that Conte could express and that Inter are right to look to emulate Juventus’ success.

Taking to Twitter, Capuano claimed: “Conte captured reality by saying that the gap to Juventus has been narrowed but not completely closed. Those that have won over many years must be seen as a reference to everyone else. And they attack him? What was he supposed to say?”
