An Italian journalist has played down the rumours that a Saudi Arabian takeover of Inter is imminent as there are a number of factors in the way of the deal, according to a report in the Italian broadcast media.

Speaking during the radio show Tutti Convocati, Fabrizio Biasin explained that there was talks between the Suadi Arabian Public Investment Fund and Inter but they chose Newcastle United for a number of reasons, one being the stadium.

“No, at least not in the immediate future. When the PIF fund thought about European football, they reasoned about Inter, then they chose Newcastle for a thousand reasons, it got cold, for arriving in conditions such as the stadium of ownership.”

The stadium ownership issue appears to be key to any future deal which is why Suning may want to push ahead more vigorously with the plans to redevelop the San Siro.

Progress is being made with an architectural firm and design having now been chosen, but if they can get the stadium constructed and functioning, PIF may be much more likely to meet their valuation of the club which is reportedly standing at €1 billion.
