Christian Eriksen was made to pay for not playing in a long time but still had some good moments during Inter’s Coppa Italia success over Fiorentina on Wednesday, noted Italian journalist Fabrizio Biasin believes.

Eriksen was granted a rare opportunity to play and an even rarer opportunity to start as Antonio Conte opted to deploy him in the unfamiliar role of regista at the Stadio Artemio Franchi.

He completed the full 120 minutes, having previously never managed a full 90 this season, as the Nerazzurri secured a 2-1 win after extra-time.

“Eriksen paid for his lack of game time recently in his first attempt at playing as a regista,” Biasin explained in an editorial piece which appeared in today’s print edition of Italian daily newspaper Libero.

“He failed to pick up the tempo and lost the fall too many times but it is thanks to his shot that Alexis Sanchez obtained the penalty that let Inter take a 1-0 lead.

“In extra time, another shot caused Pietro Terracciano problems and one of his corner kicks gave Romelu Lukaku the chance to finish the match.

Biasin concluded by adding: “In short, he plays better when he plays as a mezzala, we will have to see if Conte will give him another chance.”

This season Eriksen has been limited to just 14 appearances across all competitions to date, and the majority of his appearances have been made off the substitutes bench.

The 28-year-old Danish national team player, who is under contract with the club until the end of the 2023-24 season, has failed to make any goal contributions thus far when on the pitch this term.
