Italian Journalist Ciro Venerato: “Inter Not Likely To Sign Napoli Captain Lorenzo Insigne For Tactical Reasons”

Inter are not making Napoli captain Lorenzo Insigne a transfer priority as he does not fit in with the kind of tactical profile that they need for their squad.

This according to Italian journalist Ciro Venerato, who spoke to Italian broadcaster Rai Radio and explained that the Nerazzurri are not likely to move for the 31-year-old due to questions about his fit in coach Simone Inzaghi’s preferred formation and the presence of other forwards in the team.

Insigne’s current contract is set to expire at the end of June 2022, and with no extension having been agreed he has attracted the interest of a number of clubs.

The winger could be available on a free transfer next summer when he is out of contract, or the Partenopei could choose to sell him during the January transfer window at a cut price fee in order to monetize his sale.

The Nerazzurri were reported to be interested in Insigne during the summer and continuing to track him, but Venerato does not believe that he is a major target for them anymore.

“The deal does not have much traction,” he stated. “The Nerazzurri no longer seem interested in the Azzurri captain for several reasons. The first is of his style – tactical doubts persist about the attacker’s adaptability to Inzaghi’s 3-5-2 system.”

“The renewal of Lautaro and the arrival of Correa preclude a significant investment in a big player in that area of the pitch,” he went on. “In June, the directors focused on young prospects (Raspadori and Scamacca to start with).”

Venerato also spoke about the interest of the Partenopei in reported Inter target Andre Onana, stating that “Napoli were also interested in the Ajax free agent Onana, expected to come to Milan at the end of the season. Davide Lippi had tried on behalf of the Azzurri. But Onana had already chosen Inter.”
