Italian football legend Gigi Riva has passed away aged 79.
The former striker was taken to hospital after falling ill at his home in Sardinia, where unfortunately his health deteriorated on Monday.
Retiring in 1976, Riva is considered one of the greatest forwards of all time scoring 205 goals in 374 appearances many of which were for Cagliari.
Prolific for both club and country, he won the European Championship in 1968 and a Serie A title the following year.
Riva cemented himself at Italy’s record goal scorer with 35 goals in 42 appearances and later served as part of his country’s technical setup between 1988 and 2013.
