‘It was like a morgue’ – Gibraltar’s dressing room in disarray after 14-0 hammering against France

Gibraltar’s national team were at the receiving end of a ruthless attacking display from France, ending with a scarcely believable 14-0 scoreline on Saturday at Nice’s Allianz Riviera. This was Les Bleus’ largest win in their history, surpassing their 10-0 humiliation of Azerbaijan back in 1995. Strikes from Kylian Mbappé (3), Olivier Giroud (2), Kingsley Coman (2), Ousmane Dembélé, Adrien Rabiot, Youssouf Fofana, Jonathan Clauss, Warren Zaïre-Emery, Marcus Thuram and an own goal from Ethan Santos, whose red card made matters even easier for Les Bleus, have contributed to a historic night for French football. France have inflicted Gibraltar the biggest victory in men’s Euros qualifying history.

Gibraltar’s players ‘were crying’

With seven wins out of a possible seven, France have cruised through their qualifying campaign and booked their place in Pot 1 for the tournament’s group stage draw, which will take place at Hamburg on Saturday, December 2. Unfortunately for Gibraltar, they will have little time to focus and regroup. Julio Ribas’ team are due to face The Netherlands, who also qualified for the Euros, this Tuesday at Faro, Portugal.

The Gibraltar dressing room was already in tatters inside Nice’s Allianz Riviera. Gibraltar Chronicle understands that many tears were shed in the aftermath of the 14-0 defeat. “It was like a morgue”, the outlet writes. “Players were crying, quiet, sunken heads and not a word spoken. They felt devastated.”
