Derby County manager Wayne Rooney is going to have a major decision to make ahead of the Rams’ clash with Reading on Wednesday with goalkeeper Kelle Roos now suspended.

Roos was sent off in the 57th minute of the Rams’ clash with Sheffield United on Saturday after he brought down Billy Sharp after he raced towards a through ball from Oliver Norwood.

Ryan Allsop was brought off the bench for the final half an hour of the game for his first Championship appearance for the Rams as a result. The keeper was unable to keep a clean sheet though with him being beaten by Sharp’s late penalty.

The absence of Roos against Reading means that David Marshall might potentially get the chance to step out from the cold with him having been relegated to third choice keeper at the start of the campaign.

The experienced Scotland international might be someone that Rooney can look to reintroduce to compensate for Roos’ absence and it would show he might still have a future at Derby if he was.

So with Roos suspended for the visit of Reading, we asked some of our FLW writers whether they feel Rooney should now hand a chance for Marshall to come back into the fold…

Kelle Roos has made a positive start to the season however there is no doubt in my mind that Marshall is the better keeper. Derby need to squeeze every last point out of this squad to keep their pipedream of staying in the division going for as long as possible.

They have the composed heads, though not at the weekend, of Curtis Davies and Phil Jagielka sat in front of an uncertain glovesman in Roos. Marshall would make the backline feel much more assured and despite his age the Scotsman is easily a top half second tier goalkeeper.

It is a no-brainer that Marshall is the best keeper at the club even with Ryan Allsop’s impressive performances for Wycombe Wanderers last term, it will be interesting to see which way Rooney falls on this dilemma.

I’m not particularly sure he’ll play.

Rooney isn’t obviously a fan of Marshall, to put it bluntly, as he went out and addressed his goalkeeping options in the summer when other areas needed working on.

Marshall hasn’t played for a while, and I think that if he was part of the manager’s plans, then he would have featured more often.

Ryan Allsop is Derby’s number two, and it’s now time for him to prove his worth and make a point to the manager in training and in games.

Billy Mulley

Wayne Rooney will not be too disheartened by the fact that Kelle Roos is now suspended because he has two competent enough options in Ryan Allsop and David Marshall.

It is definitely a selection headache for Rooney to contend with. Marshall has lots of domestic and international experience, but Allsop has been playing deputy to Roos in the league.

Before the season started, Rooney outlined that Roos was his number one and Allsop was his number two, but Marshall was an extremely reliable option for The Rams last season.

The Scotsman conceded 40 goals in 33 Championship matches last time out, keeping nine clean sheets in the process.

It is quite rare that a club has three experienced, competent options at their disposal, and whilst Roos is suspended, it is an excellent chance for whoever grans the starting spot.

I cannot see Marshall starting as I think Allsop has earned this chance.
