It has only taken an act of God for Newcastle United to get this…

It was almost biblical…

All it has taken is an act of God.

Yes, the celestial heavens opened and the rain came down.

Then more rain and more rain, plus more rain after that. Never so much rain seen before.

Then it finally came to pass.

Newcastle United achieving the impossible.

A ‘home’ cup match at St James’ Park.

The conspiracy theorists have been loving it for over a year…

The Newcastle United cup draws these past two seasons:

27 September 2023 – Newcastle 1 Man City 0

1 November 2023 – Man U 0 Newcastle 3

19 December 2023 – Chelsea 1 Newcastle 1 (United lose 4-2 on penalties)

6 January 2024 – Sunderland 0 Newcastle 3

27 January 2024 – Fulham 0 Newcastle 2

27 February 2024 – Blackburn 1 Newcastle 1 (United win 4-3 on penalties)

16 March 2024 – Man City 2 Newcastle 0

28 August 2024 – Nottingham Forest 1 Newcastle 1 (United win 4-3 on penalties)

September 2024 – AFC Wimbledon v Newcastle

Yes, quite incredibly, it is over a year since we had a cup draw where Newcastle United were drawn out at home. Even then we got Manchester City at St James’ Park, who ironically are the team we play at SJP only three days before the ‘home’ cup match against AFC Wimbledon.

As I said, it has only taken an act of God to flood Plough Lane, sadly causing serious damage to this fan-owned club’s pitch and stadium.

Leading to Monday’s announcement of this first ‘home’ cup match since September 2023.

There have been eight (EIGHT) away draws in a row in domestic cup competitions.

Getting away from the conspiracy theorists and their hot balls claim…

What exactly are the chances of getting eight away cup draws in a row?

Well the same as spinning a coin, or anything else that has only two equal possible outcomes, it is a one in 256 chance of getting eight away draws in a row, or indeed, eight home draws in a row (I wish!).

With this act of God level turn of events, it means that the Carabao Cup last 16 draw will be made before the AFC Wimbledon v Newcastle United match at St James’ Park.

If United get a ninth away draw on Wednesday night, that will make it a one in 512 chance of having happened.

Whilst if Newcastle United did get through against both AFC Wimbledon and an opponent away in the last 16 round, then got another away draw in the quarter-final,  ten consecutive away draws would equal a one in 1024 chance of that having happened.

We might never win a trophy but Newcastle United could possibly make it into the Guinness Book of World Records for away draws!

Who holds the record currently in English football???
