Liverpool attacker Rachel Furness says that it feels fantastic to have equalled David Healy’s goalscoring record for Northern Ireland.

The 33-year-old netted a hat-trick for The Green and White Army in their record 11-0 victory over North Macedonia in Skopje earlier today.

Furness’ treble has taken her onto 36 goals for her country, the same number that was netted by men’s team legend David Healy prior to his retirement from international football in 2013. Furness spoke to the media after this afternoon’s game and said that it was an amazing feeling to equal Healy’s record for Northern Ireland.

“It feels fantastic,” Furness said. “First and foremost, it was about having a good team performance today and trying to be as clinical as we could.

“I am over the moon to have been able to add to my goal tally and it was just amazing to be back on the scoresheet for Northern Ireland.”

Northern Ireland face North Macedonia in the return fixture at Seaview in Belfast on Monday evening and Furness said that the team are again looking to put in a professional performance.

She said “We will focus, we will regroup and we will put in what we need to on the training ground.  We won’t get carried away, we are not a nation that does that, we have always been on the other end of those kind of results.

“We will re-focus and we will see what we can do on Monday night to win the game and hopefully, it will be as convincing as it was today.”

Northern Ireland’s FIFA Women’s World Cup Australia & New Zealand 2023 qualifier against North Macedonia at Seaview kicks-off at 7pm on Monday evening. The game is a complete sell-out.
