Newcastle United will welcome Manchester City at St. James’ Park this Wednesday night as they look to earn a victory in the third round of the EFL Cup. The Magpies thrashed Sheffield United by a 8-0 scoreline in the Premier League recently which should give them a lot of confidence ahead of this cup clash versus Man City.

Eddie Howe will opt for a 4-3-3 formation once again and might name a strong first team for this game. Alexander Isak will lead the line for the Tyneside club on the attacking end of the pitch.

Nick Pope will operate in goal for the Magpies after securing a clean sheet in his last domestic outing. Fabian Schar will once again play alongside Sven Botman at the centre of Newcastle’s backline as they try to neutralise the threat of Man City’s Erling Haaland during the game.

Kieran Trippier will try to make a difference as Howe’s primary right-back while Dan Burn looks to keep things tidy defensively as the left-back. Both of them need to be at the top of their game if they are to restrict the opposition from causing problems from the flanks.

Lewis Hall and Tino Livramento will provide cover for the defensive positions on the bench.

Midfield

Sandro Tonali, Bruno Guimaraes and Sean Longstaff will anchor the midfield for the Tyneside giants as they focus on making life tough for Man City at the centre of the park. All three of them would also have to pass the ball well if they want to create some decent chances on the counter.

Elliot Anderson will make up the numbers on the bench but might come on to make an impact in the second half if Howe opts to call upon his services.

Attack

Anthony Gordon will function as the left-sided wide player while Jacob Murphy hopes to catch the eye from the right flank.

Alexander Isak will lead the charge for the Magpies down the middle. He was rested against Sheffield United and would be fresh for this game versus Man City.

Callum Wilson and Miguel Almiron will have to be content with a spot on the bench as they wait for their chance to shine as the late game substitutes if needed.
