During Argentina’s comfortable 2-0 win over Poland to top Group C in Doha, Lionel Messi and Robert Lewandowksi were seen speaking to each other behind their hands after a coming together during the game as Lewandowksi fouled Messi. The Polish striker offered to reconcile but Messi refused, suggesting that previous bad feeling between the two players remains.

Speaking after the game, Messi declined to divulge what was said, explaining: “I’ve been taught that everything that happens on the pitch stays on the pitch and that everything that happens in a locker room stays inside the locker room. I’m not going to speak about something that happened privately.”

The quarrel between the pair started during 2020 as the Ballon d’Or prize for that year was cancelled by the French magazine France Football due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Messi, however, had stated at the time that Lewandowski clearly deserved to win, had the Ballon d’Or been awarded. However, Lewandowski later complained that Messi still didn’t vote for him in FIFA’s ‘Best’ awards that same year, saying: “I would like his statements to be honest, not just empty words.” As reported by El Grafico, Messi later responded, saying: “I don’t agree with what he said, but I don’t give it that much importance either… Let him say what he wants. I’m not interested.”

“My conversation with Messi?… I had to defend a lot today, especially against Leo. It was a fun little duel, but it’s all good. Argentina have a great team and are one of the favourites.”
