Fabián Ruiz (27) and Luis Enrique have worked with each other before, and should the Spanish manager’s arrival at Paris Saint-Germain be confirmed, they will do so again. But for how long?
Ruiz joined PSG last summer, and had a mixed first season at the club, scoring three goals in 27 matches in all competitions. Collectively, the club won the Ligue 1 title but fell short of expectations in the Champions League and the Coupe de France. Consequently, Christophe Galtier will depart Les Parisiens this summer, even if his departure is yet to be officialised.
The road to finding his replacement has been arduous. PSG reportedly approached Zinédine Zidane (again), whilst drawn-out negotiations with Julian Nagelsmann failed to reach a positive conclusion. As reported by L’Équipe, Enrique is now expected to be named as Galtier’s successor in the dugout at the Parc des Prince. However, the appointment could be bad news for Ruiz.
The pair worked together when Enrique was manager of the Spanish national team. However, between the end of Euro 2021 and the 2022 Qatar World Cup, after which Enrique was sacked, Ruiz wasn’t picked to represent La Roja. According to AS, the pair allegedly fought after an extra-time win against Croatia (5-3) in the Round of 16 at the Euros. The heated discussion revolved around positional issues. Whilst Ruiz denies that this was the case, the PSG midfielder was never selected by Enrique again, despite a successful 2021/22 season with Napoli, which saw him get his move to Les Parisiens.
Luis De La Fuente’s arrival as Spain manager has seen Ruiz re-integrated into the national setup, but Enrique’s arrival at PSG could see the midfielder marginalised.
